About This Song
Nine hundred years ago the poet Jayadeva opened his Gita Govinda with the Dashavatara Stotra — eleven Sanskrit verses walking through every form the Divine has taken to save the world. Jai Jagdish Hare is that same journey, carried into Hindi, so that the ten avatars can be sung in the language of the heart rather than only recited in the language of the scholars.
Fish, tortoise, boar, man-lion, dwarf, axe-bearer, prince, ploughman, awakened one, and the rider at the end of time — each one is given a verse, and each verse returns to the same cry: Ten forms, one Keshava. The refrain never changes, because the love behind the forms never changes.
A note for listeners searching: this is not the household aarti “Om Jai Jagdish Hare” by Pandit Shraddha Ram Phillauri. This is a Dashavatar bhajan — a Hindi retelling of Jayadeva’s opening hymn — which shares only that beautiful, universal refrain.
Lyrics —
Meaning of the Lyrics
The refrain. Keshava, Madhava, Gopala, Krishna — protector of the humble. In ten forms the Lord came, as the support of those who love him. Victory to the Lord of the world.
१. मत्स्य — The Fish. When the world drowned in the waters of dissolution, you kept the Vedas safe. Becoming a boat, you rekindled the lamp of dharma. As a fish you came, a current of the nectar of knowledge.
The Tortoise. When the earth trembled and swayed, you spread your back beneath it. In your vast tortoise form the world found refuge, and every danger was turned away.
The Boar. On the peak of your tusks you lifted the earth again — like a shadow resting on the moon, a beauty all its own — and carried her across to safety.
The Man-Lion. The nails of your lotus hands became blades of astonishing light. Hiranyakashipu’s pride was erased, dharma stood at the door, and as Narahari you saved your devotee.
The Dwarf. With the play of three steps you bent Bali’s pride, and the water that flowed from your toenail made every soul pure. As Vamana you came, protector of the humble.
६. परशुराम — The Axe-Bearer. When injustice filled the warriors and sin grew in the world, you came as Bhrigupati and lifted that burden away — cooling the fevers of existence, opening the door of dharma once more.
७. राम — The Prince of Raghu. As Raghupati you felled Ravana’s heads in battle. Taking away the ten-faced one’s arrogance, you raised the flag of truth — the shining light of dharma, of maryada, of the path of love.
The Plough-Bearer. On your radiant body, a garment like a rain cloud. As Haladhara you set the earth in order, and even the Yamuna let go of her fear and came to your feet.
९. बुद्ध — The Awakened One. With a heart of compassion you saw the deep sorrow of animal sacrifice. You stopped the path of violence; mercy itself became your form. As the Buddha you taught love, a stream of compassion.
कल्कि — The Rider at the End of Time. When adharma spreads its darkness and hides the truth of the world, you come as Kalki, sword in hand, to end the cruel — your brilliance like a comet, breaking the bonds of night.
११. The Poet’s Word. This utterance of the poet Jayadeva showers joy and auspiciousness. Whoever hears it with love crosses the ocean of existence. In ten forms you came, sustainer of the world.
History & Devotion
Jayadeva composed the Gita Govinda in the twelfth century, and its opening hymn — the Dashavatara Stotra, beginning Pralaya payodhi jale — became the way generations of India remembered the ten avatars. It has been sung in the Jagannath temple at Puri as daily seva, danced in Odissi and Bharatanatyam, chanted in Kerala’s Sopana tradition and in Assam’s namghars. Its closing salutation, जय जगदीश हरे, passed so completely into common devotion that the phrase now belongs to everyone.
This bhajan carries that ancient hymn into Hindi. The Sanskrit original is dense and jewelled — a single compound word can hold an entire image. Hindi opens those compounds out into something a family can sing together on a Thursday evening without a commentary in hand: the earth trembling and steadied, the tusk lifting her like a shadow on the moon, the Yamuna turning pale and then turning back in love.
What holds the song together is the structure Jayadeva himself chose. Every verse ends the same way. Ten different rescues, ten different centuries, ten different shapes — and one unvarying refrain. The theology is in the repetition: whatever form arrives when the world is in trouble, it is the same one who arrives. केशव माधव, गोपाल कृष्ण — the names change, the one who answers does not.
It is fitting that the ninth verse belongs to the Buddha, who came not with a weapon but with mercy. In a hymn full of tusks and claws and swords, the tenderest avatar is the one who simply refused to let blood be spilled. That is the EkOmkaar thread running through the whole song: one universal sound, one connecting music, one source of infinite wisdom.
